Pioneering Mountain Resorts in Nepal......

In 1981, a man with a vision, Vishnu Shrestha, had a dream of Shangril La and building a resort that not only provided excellent service and a serine ambiance amidst the stunning Himalayan scenery, but also to pioneer responsible and sustainable tourism and give something back to the local community. He built Dhulikhel Mountain Resort with the clear perception that his resort will provide quality, value-for money services in a most eco-friendly environment, bringing joy and satisfaction to the guests that stayed there.

During his life time, Vishnu was an inspiring and entirpenuring man. From humble beginnings as a tourist guide, he grew up in the tourism industry and was often disgruntled with the general disregard for local people and the beautiful environment which is the main attraction to Nepal. He nurtured a passion for the natural environment and conceived the idea of a tourist resort that would be environmentally sustainable. The entire concept of the resort and its workings are all his original ideas. One of his first ideas was to establish organic tomato farming in the region, at the time nobody was growing tomatoes, nowadays the region produces a large percent of Kathmandu’s tomatoes and this industry now provides a huge source of much needed income for local farmers.

He purchased the plot of barren land that the Resort now sits on and gradually founded his dream. He transformed the land into a rich oasis of plants, flowers and trees which encouraged birds and small animals to come back to the area. Inspired by the local architecture and village culture, he constructed the rooms using the traditional style, drawing on resources from the local area. He used thatch for the roofs and red bricks for the walls creating a beautiful landscape of buildings and nature that resembled the rural villages he so loved.

Unfortunately he was not able to carry out some of his plans before his passing, like his inspired idea to create an organic farm house garden that would supply the resort with its food stuffs and to create a cultural dance program that would train local people and establish an important source of income for them. We have honorably carried out his dreams in establishing both at our present day Resort.

Vishnu was my father, and now my family is honored to carry on his dream of obtaining nirvana on earth and we take great pleasure in presenting to you Dhulikhel Mountain Resort and great honor in serving you. Over the years our family has had the privilege of hosting the most discerning of guests, many of whom have come back, again and again.
